Globally, infrastructure is a vital asset for economic prosperity, but condition assessments tend to be subjective and infrequent. This can result in infrastructure failures, and inefficient maintenance. Infrastructure is, by its nature, difficult to monitor as the assets are large, the installations unique, and the operating conditions unpredictable. We propose a low-cost monitoring solution for rail infrastructure, by placing inertial sensors on revenue-service trains, a system which we have deployed on Pittsburgh's light rail line. Using statistical and pattern recognition techniques, we have been able to identify several important changes in the track structure, independent of the varying environmental conditions. Our research aims to build useful diagnostic tools to help the system owners operate their assets more safely and efficiently.
George Lederman is a PhD candidate in Advanced Infrastructure Systems. He received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Princeton University, a Masters in Civil Engineering from CMU, and is currently pursuing a Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering from CMU along with his PhD. He is currently a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow.
