Toward a Systematic Collection and Processing of Data in Support of Dynamic Monitoring and Decision Systems (DYMONDS) Framework for Implementing Smart Grids

Summary:This project concerns a method for collecting and organizing data necessary to demonstrate potentials of smart grid on end-to-end performance of electric energy systems. We build on the CMU’s Dynamic Monitoring and Decision Systems (DYMONDS) framework, which is model-based data-driven approach to enabling smarts and their communications so that customer choice and social objectives are aligned. This concept is an outgrowth of multi-annual multi-person effort in the Electric Energy Systems Group (EESG) http://www.eesg.ece.cmu.edu/. We propose to target in this project a systematic data collection, storing and processing for the use by utilities in the OSISoft PI System, which is recognized globally and used, by most of the utilities to support data-driven clean businesses and energy use, in particular. OSISoft is donating to both CMU and Lehigh their PI System to begin to collect on their campuses data relevant for implementing Adaptive Load Management (ALM) as one of the components of DYMONDS. The work will be based on Dr. Jhi-Young Joo’s PhD thesis, which is instrumental to defining the type of data necessary to support ALM (http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/jjoo/home.html). Sicong, a graduate student from Lehigh will devote part of her time to learning how to analyze the collected data, and to working closely with the CMU Team. Lehigh will meet with CMU team to define the type of data needed and storage into the PI System; the CMU team will focus on characterizing wind power, PV, EV and responsive demand data while the Lehigh team will focus on monitoring energy usage in one or two dorms at Lehigh. The PI Marija Ilic will coordinate data collection from both CMU and Lehigh University for storing it into first-of-its-kind multi-campus PI System for purposes of showing how the data collected can be used by the utility for bringing the value to customers, as well as to utilities.
