Performance Analysis Of Substation Automation Systems For Smart Grids

Summary:This inter-departmental collaborative project focuses on an important aspect of smart-grids research: Performance Analysis Of Substation Automation Systems. A substation automation system (SAS) plays a critical role in smart grids as it integrates intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) with network communication technologies for substation monitoring, control, and protection. Our industry sponsor of this project, ABB Inc., one of the Fortune Global 500 Top Companies, is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. This new 18-month project will address an unsolve challenge of analyzing deterministic delay performance of SAS for real-time monitoring and control in smart grid systems. The innovation and significance of the project build upon the network calculus will yield a new performance analysis framework of SAS for the power industry in Pennsylvania, USA, and across the world.

For a substation automation system (SAS), it is crucial to ensure that the system communication delays satisfy the deterministic boundaries for strictly defined operating parameters, e.g., the delay times in switching sequences [61850-4]. For example, A “Trip” (Type 1A) command, the total transmission time shall be in the order of half a cycle (10 ms) for Performance Class P1 or a quarter of a cycle (3 ms) for Performance Class P2/3 [61850-5]. By evaluating the performance data, e.g. the network delay, of different types of switches in various environments, this study will help to set up a reference of the deterministic operating parameters of the studied switches in the SAS network. This will assist in selection of switches as well as testing those switches in system integration process to ensure overall network performance. The comparison study will also help to evaluate the IEC61850 over different mediums, e.g. fiber, cable and wireless, etc.
