PITA Fiscal Year 2008 Projects - Information and Systems Technology

Intelligent Driving Aids For The Elderly & Disabled

This proposal is a collaborative effort between academic partners Lehigh University and the University of Pennsylvania with our public sector partner Lockheed-Martin Advanced Technologies Laboratory. It requests funds primarily for graduate and undergraduate stipend support. Our objective is to fuse depth maps with features, colors, and textures acquired from camera systems on-the-fly. The resulting system will generate high-fidelity reconstructions of unknown environments in real-time (15 Hz). This sensor suite will be used to develop intelligent driving aids, with a focus on augmenting the reduced faculties of the elderly and disabled. We plan to demonstrate preliminaty work on this technology during the DARPA Urban Challenge (DUC) in November 2007.
