PITA Fiscal Year 2007 Projects

Product and Process Design and Optimization

Engineering Design Projects Course
In the Engineering Design Projects Course the goal is to develop 3-10 projects per year, each linking a client directly with an interdisciplinary team of 4-6 juniors, seniors, and graduate students from any department on campus on a one- or two-semester project that is jointly defined with the client. (A client may be a Commonwealth company, a non-profit, a government agency, or CMU partner. The course runs for two semesters (August through December, and January through May) to emulate the industrial product development cycle and allow students time to carry through designs to development and prototypes. For projects requiring more time, extensions are possible, depending upon available funding.

While the project course is educational in nature, it produces conceptual designs, as well as analysis, testing, and prototyping for further development by the client/partner. It may further yield job offers for graduating CMU students in the course.
