Project Title: Improving the Diagnosis and Treatment of Small Intestine Diseases with Pill-Sized Robots

Paul Glass's Research Summary (Powerpoint Slide)

Capsule endoscopes are pills swallowed by a patient which contain a camera,a battery, and a transmitter to send high resolution images of the gastrointestinal tract to a digital storage device where they can later be analyzed by a clinician. This research proposes to improve the diagnostic power of capsule endoscopy by incorporating mechanisms into the capsule design which would allow an operator to remotely stop, orient, and move the capsule within the small intestine.

This research will explore three diverse aspects of the problem: modeling the biomechanics of the small intestine, designing and manufacturing miniature capsule endoscopes, and in-vitro and in-vivo testing of the developed devices.
