Electrical and Computer Engineering Associate Professor and CenSCIR member Priya Narasimhan has been receiving extensive media coverage lately for her YinzCam and related iBurgh mobile technology. Newsweek's Howard Fineman covered the iBurgh and YinzCam in "Pittsburgh Stars at the G20," highlighting the world-class research being done at Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh.
As well as being covered by local media, the YinzCam project has been featured also on the on-line publication
Network World and
ComputerWorld. The YinzCam also made Network World's 2009 list of "Top 10 Sports Technologies to Love" and is now a Carnegie Mellon spin-off, looking to deploy this sports innovation into more arenas and stadiums in the U.S. and abroad.
Narasimhan's recent technology - the iBurgh - is an iPhone application (or "app") that gives citizens the opportunity to take a picture of a public nuisance and send it instantly to the city's 311 complaint system. It is the first mobile e-government app to be created and has been deployed for the city of Pittsburgh. In the last month alone, it has had 4,000 downloads. Narasimhan presented her work on the iBurgh at the annual Netroots Nation conference in July and discussed how technology can be used to enhance democracy in Pittsburgh and beyond.
