Professor Hansen's research focuses around developing distributed systems with quantitative resource-efficient QoS (Quality of Service) guarantees, multimedia applications such as video, audio and web browsing, QoS negotiation, traffic forecasting and pro-active resource management, scientific visualization, data mining, computer systems, and logic synthesis.

He recived his B.S., Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Mathematics, in 1987 from Carnegie Mellon University, M.S., Electrical and Computer Engineering, in 1988 from Carnegie Mellon University, and Ph.D., Electrical and Computer Engineering, in 1992 from Carnegie Mellon University
