Dr. Finol's research focuses on the use of computational
fluid dynamics and finite element analysis applied to cardiovascular diseases. Such
applications include in vivo biomechanics of abdominal aortic aneurysms, cerebral
aneurysms, endovascular grafts, design and testing of cerebral protection filters,
three-dimensional reconstruction protocols of medical images, rapid prototyping
techniques for the development of blood vessel geometries, finite element mesh
requirements for computational fluid dynamics simulations in large arteries, and
continuum mechanics modeling of growth and remodeling of aneurysms. Dr. Finol
operates the Vascular Biomechanics and Biofluids Laboratory.
Dr. Finol received his B.E., Mechanical Engineering, in 1994 from the Universidad de
Carabobo in Venezuela, M.S., Mechanical Engineering, in 1997 from the University of
Massachusetts, Lowella, and his Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering,
in 2002 from Carnegie Mellon University.
