"Mechanics of shape-memory alloys"
Shape-memory alloys have the ability to recover an apparently plastic deformation suffered below a critical temperature when it is heated above this temperature. This ability is a particular manifestation of a displacive solid to solid phase transformation involving a change of crystal structure. This phase transformation gives rise to fine-scale microstructure and shape-memory alloys are able to deform through a rearrangement of this microstructure. This talk will give an overview of the novel questions of mechanics that are raised by shape-memory alloys, and how ideas developed in this context have broad impact.
